Huzzah! The new Instagram algorithm has finally arrived! You may have heard the rumblings that it was coming, or, on the other hand, you may have not really given a toss about it's arrival... like, what is an algorithm anyway?! Well, let us give you the 411...
Earlier in the year, Instagram announced that they would be updating their algorithm (or their platform rules) to make your feed more chronological and “feel more fresh.” For a lot of account owners... this news was like hearing a message from the gods, because it FINALLY meant that users might actually see more of your posts, not just the stuff that Instagram says is worth showing.
Wellll.... Unfortunately the chronological feed that we used to know and love isn't coming back... entirely. Basically, Instagram has confirmed that with the new algorithm we WILL see everything... we just have to keep scrolling. So, what this means is that all the content from people you follow will be shown on your feed, however, it will be organised by a number of factors. The three main factors that will determine what you see in your Instagram feed are:⠀
1) INTEREST: Instagram will predict what's most relevant to you based on past behaviour with similar content. So, if you're a fan of sausage dog videos (and, who isn't?!) you'll get served this content first by those types accounts you follow.
2) RECENCY: No chronological isn't coming back, but how recently a post was published does matter. The new Instagram algorithm will prioritise recent posts, so you’ll hopefully see fewer posts from over a week ago.
3) RELATIONSHIP: Your connection with the person who shared it matters. Instagram knows if you're liking, commenting and sharing and tries to show you content from accounts that you engage with more frequently. So, if you want to get your followers to see more of your content, prompt them to get engaging with it!
